COVENTRY – A national technology roadmap that will support the growth and technical capabilities of the UK construction and infrastructure sector was launched by Lord Prior of Brampton today at a meeting of the Construction
Leadership Council (CLC).
The roadmap, produced by i3P (the Infrastructure Industry Innovation Platform) in partnership with the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) outlines the critical challenges which need to be addressed in order to meet the targets set in the Government’s Construction 2025 Strategy – including 33% lower costs; 50% faster delivery; 50% lower emissions, and a 50% increase in exports.
Governed by client representatives from major infrastructure and construction projects and their supply chains, and managed by the Knowledge Transfer Network, i3P provides an opportunity for the industry to share ideas and innovations and commit to collaborative innovation projects.
The roadmap articulates the key technologies – from the use of augmented and virtual reality to fully autonomous sites – that will enable the industry to address its challenges. It has been aligned around the CLC’s three strategic themes: Digital Transformation, Manufacturing Construction, and Lifecycle
The roadmap will be a living document; with new information added through input from industry stakeholders. It will be supported by the i3P Collaborative Innovation Fund, to pursue feasibility, scoping and proof of concept studies to develop the required technologies to address industry challenges.
Lord Prior said: “The development of this technology roadmap represents an important step forward in the drive to significantly improve productivity and make the UK construction industry world class. By collaborating on research and development projects, this will help to mobilise and accelerate innovative solutions that will transform the whole sector.”
Neil Rawlinson, Strategic Development Director, MTC, commented: “The passion shown by the i3P industrial players to collaborate for the benefit of the whole industry has impressed me. That is why I’m so pleased to have been part of the team which has delivered the first National Technology Roadmap for the industry.”
Andy Mitchell, Chair of i3P and CEO of Tideway, said: “The development of a strategic relationship between i3P and MTC has enabled us to accelerate our ambitions. We are confident that this industry-wide collaborative ‘innovation plan’ will transform and drive the delivery of infrastructure for the benefit of users, the industry and for UK plc.”
