Inspecting concealed pipework- Can your organisation meet this challenge?

KTN-iX™ (KTN-innovation eXchange)- Challenge: Inspecting concealed pipework

What is KTN-iX™ ?

KTN-iX™ (KTN-innovation eXchange) is a cross sector program supporting innovation transfer by matching industry challenges to innovative companies from other sectors. It does this through putting large businesses with technical needs in contact with companies who have the right innovative solutions, for faster development of novel solutions.

KTN-iX™ is delivered by Knowledge Transfer Network, who has worked with key industry stakeholders to identify specific innovation challenges through a series of ‘guided innovation’ workshops. The challenges predominantly focus on near-term issues that could provide incremental progress in the developments within these growing sectors.

The challenge

Pipework systems within industrial power plants contain many metres of concealed pipework. Pipes may be buried, located in trenches, clad, lagged or difficult to access. This concealment of pipework makes it difficult to inspect and monitor its condition. The challenger is seeking solutions which will support existing maintenance and safety programmes and enable them to inspect concealed pipework to determine the possible presence of general or localised corrosion and to detect thinning of pipe walls.

Whilst not limiting the technologies from solution providers, it is expected that solutions would consider innovations from some of the following areas:

  • Water industry
  • Oil and gas sector
  • Chemical industry
  • Civil engineering
  • Sensors and advanced imaging
  • Food industry
