Tideway’s innovative More by River transport strategy has been named Environment and Sustainability Initiative of the Year at the British Construction Industry Awards.
More by River is Tideway’s commitment to ensuring that we transport as many materials as we can by river, taking lorry movements off London’s roads to limit pollution, congestion and to protect road-users. Tideway has committed to transporting 90 per cent of tunnel spoil – about 4.2 million tonnes – by river.
To date, the More By River transport strategy has:
- Kept an average of 200 lorries off the road every day in 2018/19
- Moved more than two million tonnes of material by river
- Avoided more than 230,00 two-way lorry movements to date.
Commenting on the award, Roger Bailey, Tideway’s Chief Technical officer said: “This is excellent recognition of the hard work and commitment of the transport logistics team at Tideway in partnership with our main works contractors and their marine operators. Together we have created new benchmarks for the safe use of the river, modernising the freight fleet and up-skilling the workforce”.
The British Construction Industry Awards are the most prestigious awards in the built environment sector, recognising excellence in project delivery and delivering positive outcomes for society at large.
